Do you ever use the metro in Amsterdam? A metro line has been running from Amsterdam Noord to Amsterdam Zuid since 2018. With eight stations: Station Noord, Noorderpark, Central Station, Rokin, Vijzelgracht, De Pijp, Europaplein, and Station Zuid. There have recently been stickers per station with a QR code on them, which you can scan for something interesting. Apparently, each station has something unique to offer. I'll now take you station by station, introducing you to each story in this 'museum.'‘.
Noord
Do you believe this will become the next Instagram hotspot? The Noord/Zuidlijn begins at Station Noord, and from there, you can immediately take the bus to the muddy region of the Netherlands. What can you see at Station Noord as part of this tour? You will see all white lines on the ground if you want to get on the metro above (or if you are waiting). Harmien Lieburg created them as a piece of artwork. You may be wondering what this artwork represents. This is Amsterdam from a bird's eye view. The artwork is also known as Flyways, and as a result, the swampy area of Amsterdam-North becomes visible, but only from a bird's eye view.
Noorderpark
This station has something that will quickly pique your interest. De Poorten van Noord is located at the end of the station. You enter the IJ tunnel after seven gates slide past you. What do these gates represent, and what story do they wish to tell? De Poorten van Noord are a literal representation of Amsterdam North. The expensive canal houses are an icon of our capital, and when people think of Amsterdam, they immediately think of Leidseplein and all the beautiful canal houses where the local people live.
'Van opbouw naar afbraak.' The Poorten van Noord observe the development of Amsterdam Noord. The goal of this work is to give the residents of Amsterdam North a happy feeling because they should be happy where they live. For example, Amsterdam Noord differs from De Jordaan. This artwork depicts the city's historic core, implying that the city's historic structures have significance.
Centraal Station
You can already see it if you take the escalators up. A 27-meter-wide video work will be displayed in the arrivals hall. This work depicts a typical Dutch landscape, but it also forecasts the weather for the next day. As a result, the landscape changes every day. So, everything you see on the screen actually occurs the day after. David Claerbout created this piece.
Rokin
You will undoubtedly notice this work of art as you ride the escalator up and down. Between the escalators is a display case that goes diagonally upwards and contains old objects discovered, for example, during excavation work. Think about vases, glasses, keys, and other items. Everything is neatly arranged next to each other, so you won't get bored while riding the long escalator.
Vijzelgracht
This is the centre point; Vijzelgracht station, where you will see the artwork. When you use the escalator, you can see all of the lines on a large screen. These are supposed to represent the lifelines of people who are important to singer Ramses Shaffy. All milestones are written there, and the end result is a beautiful portrait of Ramses Shaffy himself. Another interesting fact about Vijzelgracht Station is that it has the longest escalators. The escalators here are 47 metres long.
De Pijp
You can see a long underground corridor if you walk through De Pijp station. The artwork on the wall can already be seen, specifically the colours that slowly trickle down. Amalia Pica created this abstract artwork.
Europaplein
Is there anything romantic about this artwork? It certainly is! A woman walking through a subway tunnel can be seen on one side of the platform. On the other side, you can see a man walking through a tunnel. 'I WANT A PERMANENT WAVE,' say the large purple letters on the walls. What does it all mean? A special meeting on the platform. According to the artist, he was inspired by the film Trans-Europ-Express.
Normally, you rush through the station to catch the subway. You now know that metro line 52 has something unique that you will never get tired of. While you wait, you can also learn a little bit of history.
