Are you an animal lover who wishes to contribute to animal welfare? Consider adopting an elephant. Hicran, a young woman of 18, feels good about having accomplished that. ''I am a huge animal lover," Hicran says. There have been more calls lately offering to help you adopt an elephant or another animal. The details of what that means and how to do it are explained below.
The Amsterdam-based student Hicran Altuntaş is 18 years old. She currently resides in Northern Amsterdam and is pursuing a history teaching degree. Hicran made the decision to adopt an elephant from Thailand last week. The benefit of adopting is that she does not have to travel all the way to Thailand. '' You can choose an elephant from the World Animal Protection organization in the Netherlands. This way, you pay a monthly fee and the elephant has a safe place to live as well as enough food and water''. According to Hicran, she is also well cared for.
Why did you decide to adopt an elephant?
‘Misschien komt het raar over, maar ik heb altijd al een zwakte gehad voor hoe olifanten leven. Sinds kleins af aan kijk ik dagelijks National Geographic programma’s en ben ik erg geïnteresseerd in het leven van dieren, maar bij olifanten word ik altijd zo droevig. Olifanten leven namelijk in kuddes. Ze trekken telkens rond en hebben enorm veel liters water nodig voor hun grote lichamen. Als er een olifant zwak wordt, laat de kudde die achter. Vaak is dit een baby of juist een moederolifant. Dat zijn de regels van de groep. Ze stoppen niet voor stervende of mindere groepsleden maar gaan gewoon door met hun zoektocht. Vaak zie je dat een moederolifant haar kindje zo moet acherlaten met tranen in haar ogen. Dat komt allemaal omdat er een gebrek is aan water en het is moeilijk vindbaar voor deze olifanten. Ze hebben het dagelijks steeds minder en minder. Wij mensen zijn wreed. Wij hebben de natuur zodanig verwoest waardoor dieren steeds minder eten en drinken hebben. Dit doet mij pijn. Ik wilde mijn steentje bijdragen en een moederolifant helpen, daarom heb ik een olifant geadopteerd. In mijn hart heb ik dan het gevoel dat ik haar een mooie toekomst kan geven’. Hicran heeft een 30-jarige olifant geadopteerd genaamd Mae Mayura. Kleine Mae Mayura werd geboren in gevangenschap. Ze versleepte bomen uit het bos en werd later ingezet voor olifantenritjes met toeristen op haar rug. Vaak werkte ze gescheiden van haar moeder en zag ze haar alleen als er even geen werk was. Inmiddels is Mae gered en woont ze nu bij de opvang Changchill waar ze in goede handen is.

Can multiple people adopt the same elephant?
It goes without saying that you can't adopt a random elephant from the forest because this involves rescued elephants. The majority of the elephants at World Animal Protection were rescued after being used as tourist attractions. They did not receive adequate care. Mae Mayura, Hicran's adopted elephant, was imprisoned first. She dragged trees from the forest before becoming a tourist attraction. She was rescued, but it is not yet safe for her to be released back into the wild. Mae will be cared for in an animal-friendly elephant shelter for the time being. You can adopt an elephant in a number of ways. For example, for three euros per month, you can provide an elephant with the necessary medications. With eight euros per month, you can provide enough grass, leaves, fruit, and vegetables for the elephant. You can provide shelter for the elephant for fifteen euros per month. "Yes, multiple people can adopt Mae," Hicran says, "and I think that's better because she'll get more food and love''. ''Mae is unaware of how many parents she has."
Do you advise others to do the same?
"I recommend adopting an animal, and your preferences may include monkeys or other animals. In my case, it was an elephant''. You can adopt an animal from anywhere this way. Consider koalas in Australia, endangered sea turtles, or a type of monkey at Stichting AAP. Hundreds of animals worldwide require assistance. Animals available for adoption are typically from illegal farms or are kept as pets in cramped spaces. Hicran says that although you rarely get to see the animals you care for, it still feels good to be connected. ''Because of how much of nature we have destroyed, it is the least we can do''.
